少し昔の話ですが、旺文社の百万人の英語というラジオ講座があり、その番組の中で英語を教えていた某大学の中村先生はlet it beをなんと日本語で歌いました。英語の発音が悪いので味噌が腐るそうです。高名な渡部昇一氏も英語の原本さえ読めなかったとの記述が「知的生活の方法」にありました。東大、山梨大学の英文科出身の先生方も英語は話せなかった、、、、今の英語教育はどうなっているのかはわかりませんが、私が学生の頃よりも過熱しています、ということは先生方のレベルは昔とあまり違わないのか？下のビデオを見ていてそう感じました。このビデオのように英語を教えると英語を話せるような人間は育たないでしょう。ハチオン（発音）に問題があっても、先生が英語で話さなければ、英語を話す生徒は育ちません。ちなみに、英語はイディオム、決まり文句のオンパレードですからそれを無条件、無制限に増やしていくのが最良、最短の王道です。

英語がかなり出来る人でも映画を見るとさっぱりわからないという人はざらにいるはずです。かく言うわたしもその一人だったからそれは身にしみてわかります。しかし、今では、わからないものがないといえば嘘になりますが、ほとんどありません。字幕が邪魔なだけです。ちなみに先週見たミッション:インポッシブル/ゴースト・プロトコルでは下品なオチの場面で笑ったのは私一人でした。字幕を見ていた人は理解できなかったでしょう。正直に言えば100%の理解は難しいものがあります。それは日本人にはどうしても理解できない文化的なものや、固有名詞、時事英語などの問題でどうしても語彙、イディオムでは克服できない部分もあります。しかしそれは枝葉末節で、実はよーく考えると日本語でも果たして100%の理解ができているかは怪しいものです。わたしの言葉を信じて単語とイディオムを増やしていけば映画、テレビ、ラジオの英語はアメリカ英語、イギリス英語、オーストラリア英語などのいわゆる標準的な英語なら必ず余裕で楽しめるレベルくらいにはなるはずです、、、、ここまでは無駄話で今日は塗炭の苦しみを味わう、辛酸をなめるを意味するbite the bulletを紹介します。麻酔なしで手術をするときには患者に銃弾を噛ませたことに由来します。1:04 we've wasted quite literally hundreds of billions of dollars and precious years being unable and unwilling to bite the bullet, have some painful solutions or begin to solve the problem, the sooner we get into solution mode and out of prevarication and fantasy mode where we've been stuck, the closer we are to righting the ship and allowing us to sail forward as economy.
