私の英語ノート 2024/07/27

「あのスイングに穴は多くない」　大谷に球宴初本塁打を献上した投手も脱帽　ジャッジらスター選手を呆然とさせた「破壊力」とは　一週間ほど前のニュースなのだが、多分、there aren't many holes in that swing. をそのまま訳した結果が「あのスイングに穴は多くない」となったのだろう。しかしこのような日本語は存在しない。あのスイングに欠点は多くない、あのスイングは完璧に近い、としなければいけない箇所だ。英語の hole には　ミス　の意味もある。このような訳についてインターネット上ではおかしいと言う声があがらなかった。不思議だ。

トランプを狙った「銃弾の軌跡」という写真もあるが、この写真を見るとトランプはスーパーマン並みの反射神経で手を動かしている。この写真の真偽はともかくとして、ネット上に疑問の声があがっていない。こちらも不思議だ。

昨日、同僚にネイティブのいうことを鵜呑みにしてはダメだよ、といっておいた。どういういきさつでそのようなコメントに至ったかはおぼえていないが、同僚は目を丸くしていた。この同僚にはネイティブに英語の質問をするときには教養のあるネイティブ複数名に正すのがいい、と教えておいた。若いちゃらちゃらしたのに聞くと正しくない回答をされる恐れがあるからだ。発音はネイティブに聞いてもいいと思う。3;00 if there are a whole bunch of people who pronounce a word a certain way, that makes it a correct pronunciation. people have very strong opinions that there's an incorrect way to pronounce a word. but it's like saying that dog barked wrong, that's not a bark, well, the dog gets to decide. 多くの人たちが特定の発音をするなら、それが正しい発音になります。その単語の発音は違うと言い張る一部の人たちもいますが、それは犬の吠え方が違うと言うようなものです。犬の吠え方は犬が決めるのです。

留学して英語がペラペラになる日本人は沢山いる、と同僚二人に話した。その理由は日本人にはすでに中学と高校でつめ込まれた英語の土台があるからだ。留学は話すきっかけを作ってくれる。多分、海外に出た多くの日本人は最初の一ヶ月でかなり英語が話せるようになるだろう。私も二ヶ月ほど前にフィリッピンで語学留学をしている日本人女性三人組に出会ったことがある。大学での勉強ではなく、大学以外の場所で勉強しているのだと思う。そこで費用を調べると、一週間で20万円が目安のようだ。半年で約150万円となっている。、、、、そこで、私は同僚二人に言い放った。英語をマスターするのに外国に行く必要はまったくない、と。すると、笑われてしまった。私は何か面白いことを言ったのだろうか？　余計なことになるが、1ドル155円くらいだと、フィリピンの物価のほうが日本の物価よりもはるかに高くなる。だから、現在のレートで半年語学留学をすると、200万を軽く超えてくるはずだ。

nonplussed という単語がある。この単語は　confused 混乱している、の意味だが、アメリカでは　unfazed, nonchalant 物事に動じない、われ関せず、と真逆の意味で使われている。、、、、でも、私が言いたいのは、nonplussed の部分がラテン語であるということだ。ウルトラマンのウルトラもプラスマイナスのプラスもラテン語だ。
