Horatius at the bridge （橋の上のホラティウス）は、古代ローマの英雄 ホラティウス・コクレス（Horatius Cocles）が単身で橋を守ったという伝説に基づく物語で、トマス・バビントン・マコーリーによる詩としても有名。この話は「国家や仲間のために命を懸ける英雄的行為」を象徴する。どちらかと言えば、武蔵坊弁慶に似ているが、楠木正成、那須与一、赤穂浪士（大石内蔵助）なども、橋の上のホラティウスに相当する。7;20 Then out spoke brave Horatius, the Captain of the Gate:
