会社の同僚が、昔、英書を読み始めてすぐギブアップしてしまった、と私に打ち明けてきた。なんでも、調べ物が多くて読書にならなかったらしい。さもありなん。これは彼一人に限ったことではない。昔の学校英語の目指すレベルは英語は読んで理解できればいい、、、くらいのものだったから、文法、読解、解釈などにふりまわされ、英語の授業は面白くなかった。面白くも無い英語で、英語の本がすらすら読めるわけが無い。英語の小説などは話すように書かれている、だから、英書を読みたければヒアリング力を高めるのが近道だ。読解力=ヒアリング力、といっても過言ではない。そこでこの同僚には3年ほどみっちりと単語、イディオムを増やしてから英書に再チャレンジするようにすすめておいた。英米人がどのように話すのか、どのような言い回しがあるのかを頭に入れてから英書を読んだほうが頭に入りやすくなると思う。色々な人の英語を聞くと、人によってその人が好んで使う独特の言い方があるのに気が付く。英書を読んでいても同じことが言える。だからこそまず基本をしっかりと頭に入れておく必要がある。そして、この同僚にはわからない単語があれば英英辞書で調べるように助言しておいた。欧米人と対等に戦うには彼らと同じ武器を手にしなければならない。それは、英英辞書であり、彼らが使う単語、イディオムであり、彼らの実際の発音でもある。ヒアリング力をつければ、英書は必ず楽しく読めるようになる。
