竹村健一氏が亡くなったことが、職場で話題になった。私は高校生の頃、竹村健一氏の英語本を読んだことがあった。確か、カッパブックスだったと思う。そこには、竹村健一氏がおならをするをどう伝えていいかわからず、アメリカ人の前で自分のお尻を指して blow と言ったら、そのアメリカ人に怪訝な顔をされたと書かれていた。そこで、職場の同僚とのスケベ話しに一気に花が咲いたわけだが、私の話した内容を詳しく書いてしまうと、グーグルの検閲に引っかかるのでやめておく。竹村健一氏がおならをするを英語でどう言うのかを知らなかったのが不思議だが、言い方は何通りかある。そのなかで、イディオムになっているのは、break wind　だ。、、、、さて、本題はここからなのだが、break wind はおならをする、break the wind は風を切るの意味。the があるかないかで意味が違ってくる。だから、屁理屈になってしまうが、上着の上に着るウインドブレーカーもザ・ウインドブレーカーにしたほうがいい(?)と思っている。0;48 ,,, but especially topcoats over biker's jackets, the leather jacket which of course breaks the wind. 粋なニューヨーカーの女性陣は冬場コートを二枚羽織っている、黒革のジャケットとその上に更に一枚、防風用のジャンパーだ。
