米軍の独立系機関紙『星条旗新聞（Stars and Stripes）』の元発行人であるマックス・レデラー（Max D. Lederer Jr.）氏らが、「米国防総省（ペンタゴン）による報道・編集の自由への干渉と、政権に都合の悪い報道を行ったことに対する不当な解雇」を訴え、報道の独立性の大切さを伝えている。
2026年8月、同紙は米空母「アブラハム・リンカーン」内で過酷な連続勤務や食料不足による兵士らの精神的・身体的疲弊（自殺を示唆する投稿等）が深刻化している実態を報じた。しかし、国防総省はこの報道を不服とし、レデラー氏に対し記事に関わった記者と編集長の解雇を命じた。しかしレデラー氏が「報道の独立性と憲法修正第1条（言論・報道の自由）を守る」としてこれを拒否したため、自らを含めた3人全員が解雇された。星条旗新聞はジャーナリズムから、プロパガンダ（政府・軍の宣伝）ツールになりさがってしまったということだ。15;31 What we told in that particular case is that Abraham Lincoln at that point had been at sea over 270 days without a break, without a port call. That's very, very unusual for a military aircraft. They usually port much more frequently than that. Um, as a result, they had food shortages, water shortages, they had disrupted mail, punishing work days, sometimes 14, 15 hour days without a break, and mounting harm to their physical and mental health, with one soldier claiming he was going to walk off the end of the ship and kill himself. This concerned the families. I don't know why, but they were a little concerned about all that. Um, they were pressing for answers and weren't getting them. And we wrote that story. That resulted in the president saying, "Oh, the carrier can stay out longer," and the Secretary Hegseth saying it's fake news. And the press secretary Sean Parnell saying that none of it's true and it's inaccurate. Um, that did not carry the day. Other journalism organizations relying on what Stars and Stripes reported, particularly the Military Times, continued on that reporting, and as a result the Abraham Lincoln has done a port call in Thailand. It's on the way to San Diego, and the USS Washington is now on station.
