While gibbeting was intended to deter crime, it often had the unintended effect of drawing crowds and even inspiring sympathy for the condemned. When the notorious pirate Charles Vane was gibbeted in Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1721, witnesses reported that the crowd's initial bloodthirst gave way to a somber mood as they contemplated the pirate's gruesome fate. One observer noted, "Even the most hardened among us must pause at such a sight and consider the fragility of man's mortal coil."
