東京湾に入る際には三浦半島と房総半島の間を通過しなくてはならない。三浦半島と房総半島の一番幅の狭い部分を浦賀水道と呼ぶ。であるから、江戸時代後期から明治初期にかけてこの水路の要衝には外国船を砲撃するための砲台が設けられた。猿島砲台、走水低砲台・高砲台、千代ヶ崎砲台などが有名だが、英語の勉強で大切な部分は砲台 battery だ。 1:23 some of them the size of cars, some no bigger than your hand, but the comet we discovered is the size of New Yor City, from the north side of Central Park to the Battery. 隕石のなかには、車くらいの大きさのものもあれば、手のひらに乗るほど小さいものもある。しかし、我々が発見した彗星は、セントラルパークの北端からバッテリー公園まで、ニューヨークの街一つ分に匹敵する巨大さである。
