多分、上記のレポーターも　shut をゆっくりと発音させると　シャット　というのだろうと思う。しかし実際には　シュット　と言ってしまう。以前、ブログに書いたことがあるのだが、日本人は「言う」を「ゆう」と発音しないと主張する日本語教師がいた。もちろん日本人だ。この教師から「いう」しか教えられていない生徒は、「ゆう」といわれるとちょっと戸惑うだろう。floor を　flow と発音するアメリカ人を知っている。彼は普通のアメリカ人だ。教科書の発音はもちろん大切でそこがスタート地点になるのだから、大切だが、そこだけが発音の全てではない。全ての音にかなりの幅（個人差、地域差）があり、他の音とダブることさえある。松本亨先生は　ear と　year の区別がつかないと著書の中で書かれていた。ネイティブがゆっくりと発音すれば違いは明確だが、早く発音されると手がかりなしにはお手上げだ。誰でもそうだと思う。私がここで言いたいのは、making sense を心がけていれば、ヒアリングで大きく転ぶことはない、だ。

いつか、同時通訳者の千田良一先生が fatberg を 凝塊油脂（ぎょうかいゆし）と命名されたことを書いた。先日、先生から通訳者の会合で　fatberg の訳語を「固着油脂」に決定されたことを教えていただいた。日本の下水道には、オイルボールとかの可愛い固着油脂があり、中国では地溝油とかいう、正体不明のドブ油が有名だ。横須賀市の下水処理場に勤務して下水溝の掃除をしていた私の知り合いがいるが、糞尿の話しはあったが固着油脂についての話は聞かなかった。日本の下水道は海外に比べて比較的きれい（？）なのではないかと思う。

「石の上にも三年」「桃栗三年柿八年」などの根気が要る言い回しはあるが、英語は１０年勉強しても「ひよっこ」の域を出ない。１０歳児を見てみれば納得できるだろう。ここで、最澄（さいちょう）の言葉を引用する。15:54 最下鈍（さいげどん）の者も、十二年を経れば、必ず一験（いっけん）を得る。

英語の語彙の半分はフランス語から来ている、、というような内容のビデオを下に貼っておく。ということはつまり、英語が出来る人はフランス語（フランス語の語彙）を習得しやすいといえる。色々と面白いことを言っているが、一番面白い部分はイギリス英語は中世に英語の語彙にあるフランス語をラテン式に発音したり、ラテン語を語彙に取り入れたりしたのは、イギリスのインテリ階級が自分たちをちょっと利口に見せるためだったとか。アメリカ人がイギリス英語に憧れたり、日本でむやみに横文字が横行するのと構図は一緒だ。インテリと言うよりもむしろ気障（キザ）と言ったほうが正解だと思う。3:18 because it appeared more intelligent to sound Latin. ラテン語っぽく発音するのがよりインテリに見えた。

アメリカファーストを唱えた詐欺師のトランプは愛国主義の名をかたりナショナリズムを台頭させた。どこかの都知事はトランプ音頭に便乗して都民ファーストのような政党を作った。自由民主とか民進とかいうような言葉に国民ファーストの理念があることに気がつかないこと自体情けないと思うが、そもそも国民や有権者優先は政治の根底理念だからわざわざファーストと騒ぎ立てるほどのことでもない。これは政治の世界での話しだ。ところが日本の教育に目を向ければ　English First のような風潮に晒されている。なぜこのようなことを言うのかといえば、二週間ほど前に「天花粉を英語でなんていうのか知ってる？」と若い同僚に尋ねると、「天花粉ってナンですか？」と聞き返してきた。「シッカロールのことだよ」といっても通じないので、具体的に説明すると、「ああ、ベビーパウダーのことですか！」と反応してきた。ちなみに４０代の同僚にも同じ質問をしてみた。こちらも天花粉を知らない。まるで夢を見ているようだった。ここであっと驚くビデオを見てみる。2:23 の部分だ。

発音は簡単なようで難しい。英語の母音も子音も簡単なようで難しい。教科書の音と実際の音との間に開きがあるからだ。ネイティブの発音は間違っているとは言わないが、教科書どおりはっきりと区別して発音してくれるのは英語の授業だけでの話し、だと思えば、いくらか読者の気が楽になるのではないかと思う。テニスで優勝した大阪なおみ選手のインタビューの中で気になる単語はいくつかあるが、0:45 の　grand slam はこの単語を知らない人の耳には　grund slum と聞こえてしまう。大きく口を上げて発音するはずの［æ］が短く鋭い［ʌ］のように聞こえる。日本ではこのような発音をしたら先生にすぐ直されるに違いないし、このような発音は試験問題には不適当として日の目を見ることはないだろう。しかしこれが実際の発音だ。

もう一つ例を出そう。おととい記事にした　muck だが、3:51 の場面では短く鋭く発音される　muck が披露されている。一切のあいまいさはない。

昨日の「私の英語ノート 2018/09/05」は色々考えた結果、削除することにした。三人の英語教師の批判が趣旨ではなかったからだ。とにかく、英語は正しく勉強すれば、必ずモノになる。そして、英語の力と英語を伝える力はまったくの別物であることを付け加えておく。いくら英語が出来てもそれを生徒に伝える力がなければ、いい先生とはいえない。だから、私塾というプロの世界で生き残ってこれたのは、三人の英語教師は教え方がうまかったに違いないからだと思う。

日本には「釘打ちの儀式」があった。その説明は下のビデオにあるが、大雑把に解説すると、棺の蓋の固定と霊の封印の二つの意味合いがあった。
