英語が読めない日本人はまずいないと思う。訳す訳さないの部分は問わず、意味がとにかくわかると言う「読み」の意味だ。これは学校での英語教育の賜物だろう。これは大したことだと思う。というのも、私の職場に日本語を喋るフィリッピン人が何人かいたことがあるが、彼らの日本語読解力はかなり低かった。彼らの日本語は日本に来て耳から習ったものだから、会話をすれば大体は通じるが、紙に書かれたものを読むことは無理だったようだ。多分街中で見かける看板くらいは読めたのだろう。日本語の読み書きは彼らにとっては相当難しいはずだ。彼らが日本語を読もうとすれば相当の努力が必要になる。、、、、さて、何が言いたいのかといえば、それはつまり、日本人の英語はそんなに悪くないと言いたいだけだ。基礎的なものはすでに頭に入っている。だから、読めるけど話せないという日本人には、話すきっかけを与えてやるだけで何とか話せるようになる。外国に行って一ヶ月で英語を話せるようになった人はいくらでもいる。これは奇跡が起こったわけではなく、頭に蓄積されていたものがあるきっかけで口から出るようになっただけのこと。空っぽの頭では逆立ちしても何も出てこない。ヒヤリングとリーディングを積み重ねることこそがスピーキングとライティングの基礎になる。

昨日はソフトの面での語学上達法は昔から確立されている王道があると書いた。つまり暗記のことだが、その方法がある。松本亨先生のやり方だ。つまり意味のあるおぼえ方をするということだ。そしてもう一つはそれを反復すること。反復を甘く見てはいけない。母国語でも反復していないと忘れてしまう。いい例が外国にいて目からの反復入力を怠れば、手紙を書くときに漢字を忘れてしまうことだ。普段私たちは日本語を常に反復している。そのお陰で私たちの日本語は最新の状態が保たれている。英米人もまったく同じで常に英語を反復している。だから彼らの英語はアップデートされている。さて、無意味な反復はさけて、自分が問題意識を持った単語やイディオムを反復するのがいい。そのためには自分で英語を聞き、わからない単語やイディオムを徹底的に洗うのがいい。この方法を続けると自然に単語のリストが辞書のようになってくる。いつもいうことなのだが、「~するのにやぶさかではない」と言う言い方を知らない人がいる。一生の間にそう何度も聞くいい方ではない。このような言い方でも色々な場面で色々な人が話すのを聞けば少しは脳裏に焼きつくだろう。私たちは日本語をこのようにしておぼえてきた。日本語完全マスターのような参考書は使わなかった。話を英語に戻して、give a run for money というイディオムを例にとる。一度聞いてもまったくわからない。意味を調べてみる。その次にこのイディオムに出くわすとなんとなく近親感を感じる。その程度でいい。このイディオムに三度目、四度目、五度目と付き合うようになると、よくわかるようになる。単語やイディオムはそのようにおぼえなくてはならない。つまり、場数を踏みながら反復するというものだ。これ以外の方法は無い。

ヘリコプターの音がうるさくなってきた。横須賀にペテン師の大統領がくるのだろう。このペテン師大統領トランプは数年後には消える。しかし、いつまでも消えてなくならないペテンもある。宗教であり、英語学習法であったりする。「記憶力日本一の男、、、記憶術を使った英会話メソッド」とかの広告が先月辺りから頻繁に私のブラウザーに登場するようになった。確かに英語を勉強するのに有効なメソッドは存在すると思う。しかしどのようなメソッドでもそれは語源を頼りに単語を増やすような方法である程度の効果しか期待できず万能な方法ではない。いつか書いたが私が学生だった時には英語体操のようなヒアリング向上メソッドがあった。もちろんインチキ商法だ。結論から言えば、ソフトの面での語学上達法は昔から確立されている王道がある。だから、ソフト面であれこれ迷う必要などどこにも無い。語学習得とはひたすら暗記の世界だ。このブログの読者は単語やイディオムを増やすことでヒアリングやリーディングが飛躍的に向上することを知っている。だからこそ読者にはハード面を強化して（つまりいいコンピューターを使って）英語の勉強に励んでもらいたいと思っている。性能の高いコンピューターは英語学習の無駄を省き時間を大幅に短縮してくれる。
