10年ぶりで友人に会った。彼は新型コロナの脅威を信じていない。私も最初はコロナを脅威とは思わなかった。しかし、インフルエンザが激減するなかコロナの感染者と死者は増えていった。この事実をもって私はコロナ無神論者からコロナ信奉者に改宗した。

私の英語ノート 2021/05/30

今日のブログ記事で割愛した箇所がある。英語を公用語にしたためにチャンポン英語になってしまったアジア英語の国々の批判に聞こえてしまうからだ。

envelope は名詞で封筒。envelop は動詞。envelop と　develop は語源が同じでアクセントも同じ。注；英語の勉強は発音やアクセントはネイティブを手本にして、それを忠実に真似る必要がある。その謙虚な努力を惜しまなければすくなくとも話す英語はネイティブの英語に限りなく近づくはずだ。そして、 日本式英語でいい、とかのとんでもない発想には耳を傾けてはいけない。あれは自己の怠惰を慰め、正当化しようとする、責任転嫁論だ。外国人の話す日本語を聞いてみるといい。口ではお上手と褒めてはやるが、内心、下手くそな日本語、もっと勉強しろ、お前の日本語を聞くと耳が痛くなる、、、ではないだろうか？向うの人間にもそう思われたくなければ、謙虚に彼らの英語を真似るべきだ。

なぜ、割愛した箇所を元に戻したかと言えば、オーストラリア人俳優もアメリカで成功するためには、オーストラリア訛りを封印して標準アメリカ英語を話す必要があった、と言うビデオを見たからだ。オーストラリア人もネイティブ英語をしゃべるが、彼らでさえも標準北米英語を目標にしている。日本人が日本式英語で満足していて、いいはずがない。10:13 his heart was set on becoming an actor. so he had to get the dialect down and get to the US. サイモン・ベイカーの夢はハリウッドスターになることでした。そのためにはオーストラリア英語を封印して、アメリカに行くことが先決でした。

私の英語ノート 2021/05/27

同僚が私のブログを読んで、英語が聞き取れるようになった、、というか、聞き取れる英語が増えたと言っていた。この同僚には、ヒアリングはわかる単語やイディオムを積み重ねる旅のことだよ、と言っておいた。ネイディブでも同じ旅をしているのだから。光瀬龍の『百億の昼と千億の夜』ではプラトンがエルカシアの宗主から「今からお前を（なぜアトランティス滅んだかを教える時空を超える）旅に誘う」と命じられる場面があったと記憶しているが、英語もまったく同じでネイティブが辿る同じ道を旅しなくてはならない。これは単語やイディオムに限らず、向こうの文化、習慣なども時間を掛けて習得するということだ。以前、アメリカ人英語教師が、ネイティブでも熟語などは間違えるので、学校では一つずつ丁寧に勉強した、と言っているのを聞いたことがある。言葉は自然に身につくと思うのは自由だが、言葉は生まれたときから学習を続けて身につけた努力の賜物と言ったほうが正しい。
