ずっと昔、スポーツ選手は片輪者と書かれた本を読んだことがあった。スポーツをするとよく怪我をするので、あまりスポーツにのめりこむのは良くない、と言うのが趣旨だった。この本の影響ではないが、私はスポーツが得意ではない。オリンピックなどはギリシャでやればいい運動会だと思っている。運動会だから一等賞二等賞三等賞四等賞五等賞六等賞、、、、ｎ等賞まで同じ粗品（参加賞）を出せばいい。頑張って金メダルを取る必要もない。体操のシモーネ・バイルズ選手が跳馬で失敗、そして棄権した。スポーツはこうでなくてはいけない。メダルよりも、自分の体を守ること。無理をしてメダルと取るのはいいことかもしれないが、無理をして体を壊してしまっては元も子もない。昔のオリンピックは国の威信がかかっていたから、膝の怪我くらいで棄権したら、負け犬扱いされていただろう。バイルズ選手は賢明な選択をした。彼女のような選手が増えるとオリンピックやメダルへの熱が冷めて世の中が平和になれる、、、と思う。

二日ほど前に読んだ記事で、探せなくなってしまったが、オリンピック村で、ベッドがダンボール製、それとトイレが小さい、と苦情が出たらしい。ダンボール製のベッドについては、ケチはいくらでもつけられるが、誰からも文句が出るはずがない。しかし、トイレについてはほんの一部の身体の大きな人間にとっては不便だろう。十分に同情できる。足の長さとお尻の大きさが日本人とは違うからだ。米軍基地で大柄のアメリカ人が乗る自転車のサドルは日本の自転車のサドルの二倍近く大きい。それほど彼らのお尻は大きい。このような大きなお尻にはもっと大きな便器が必要だ。日本のトイレはこのような一部の人たちにとっては不便だろう。それと、足の長さだが、私はフィリッピンでオーストラリア人が購入したマンションのトイレを見せてもらったことがある。このトイレは20センチの高さのセメントの下駄を履いていた。つまりフィリッピンの普通のトイレはオーストラリア人の大男には低すぎるのだ。規格外の身体をもつとどこの国に行っても不自由する。オリンピック選手村ならではの事情ではない。、、、とはいえ、規格外の身体をもつ選手の来日は想定内というよりも、決定していたことなので、彼らに適した施設を準備できなかったものかと思う。
