believe と believe in の違い

昔、旺文社の百万人の英語で番組の司会だった有名大学の英語の教授がアシスタントの女性から believe と believe in の違いの説明を求められたことがあった。この教授は「ここは believe in でなければダメなんだよな」、、と解答していた。それは、それでいい思うが、アシスタントの女性（注；この番組では、司会の女性は現在で言うALTの役割をしていた）が求めたのは believe と believe in の使い分けだったのかもしれない。しかし、そのようなことは英語を学ぶ上で枝葉末節と言うか、本末転倒に近い。そのような解説をしたところで学生の英語がうまくなるわけではない。正しい英語を学生に与えるのが教師の役割で、学生は重箱の隅をつつくようなマネをしてはいけない。先生の与えてくれる正しい英語をどんどん吸収するのが学生の本分だと思う。そうすれば間違った英語を読んだり聞いたりすると瞬時にわかるものだ。2:22 Droganis acknowledges the journey to success hasn't been easy, though she never stopped believing in herself. レンチアさんはいつもビジネスが成功するものと自分を信じていたが、成功までの道のりは平坦ではなかった。
