久しぶりに紙の辞書を手にしてみた。Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary だ。分厚い辞書で、私がこの辞書を買ったのは今から１０年ほど前のことだ。その頃は今のようにオンライン辞書が充実していなかった。今から思えば、紙の辞書とオンライン辞書の過渡期だったのかもしれない。今は、どこでもネットがつながるので、携帯さえあれば、どこにいても検索は可能だ。だから、オンライン辞書の進歩は著しい。オンライン辞書に押されたせいか、いつの間にか（近くの）本屋から、英英辞書は消えてしまった。では、紙の辞書のいいところはどこか？それは、紙であり物理的空間を占めるということではないかと思っている。Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary　をぱらぱらとめくる、どこのページでもいいから開いて最初に出くわした単語を知っているかどうかチェックする。、、、、自分の単語力がわかる。つまり、紙の辞書は自分の英単語の実力を教えてくれる物差しなのだ。英英辞書が英語学習者のよき伴侶であることは今も昔も変わらない。
