make the grade

make the grade は何かを達成するくらいの意味だが、この grade は学校の成績(grade)のことではない、正確には gradient 坂の勾配のこと。だから急勾配を登れるか登れないかの汽車の登坂力についてのイディオムといえる。ネイティブは多分知らないと思うがネイティブの英語知らずは何の不思議もない。それはネイティブの特権といえる。日本人が油断大敵の油断の語源など知らなくても、生活で不自由することはない。0:05 I read the news today, oh boy, about a lucky man who made the grade. 大成功したラッキーな奴の記事を今朝新聞で読んだよ。
