私の英語ノート 2019/12/23

自分でも気がつかなかったのだが、塾生に言ってみて初めて気がついたことがある。それは、in a ( ) way と in the ( ) of の冠詞の違いだ。どう言う理由かはあまり考えずにいたし、私は英文法の専門家でもないから、はっきりした理由を考えることもないと思うが、事実として言えるのは　in a ( ) way　のパターンだと、冠詞は必ず a/an で、 in the ( ) of　のパターンになると、冠詞は必ず　the になる。英語を話す人たちはこれを経験則としてとらえているはずだ。実際に話されている英語を色々と聞いて、比較していると、なんとなくこの法則がわかってくる。in a ( ) way のほかにも　on a ( ) note のようなものもある。 in the ( ) of　のほかにも　with the ( ) of, at the ( ) of と言うパターンもある。どうやら、後の　of 　が the を呼ぶようだ。5:03 on a romantic note

千田先生が私の紹介したパターンの例外を示されたので紹介する。
AA: He speaks with an accent of the Tohoku dialects. But I don’t know which dialect it is.　彼は東北地方（にいくつもある訛り）の訛り（のひとつ）を話すね。どれだったかちょっとわからないけど。
BB: I know it. He speaks the Akita dialect, because I come from Akita Prefecture.　わかる、そいつは秋田弁だよ。あいつは秋田県出身だからね。
