pull up stakes は1600年代のアメリカに起源があるイディオムのようだ。アメリカ大陸の歴史が始まるのは1620年のメイフラワー号あたりからだ。stake と言うのは自分の土地を囲う木杭（境界標）のことだと思う。だからpull up stakes は 境界杭を抜くの意味になる。土地を手放す、処分する、引っ越すの意味だ。1889年のランドラッシュを描いた映画では自分の土地の所有権を示すために杭を打つ場面がある。1600年代でも同じことをやっていたに違いない。下の文例からわかるように、pull up stakes and move までを、一つのイディオムとして捉えたらいい。2:56
