私の英語ノート 2015/11/30

中央にまるで囲んだ accident waiting to happen の日本語表現を一所懸命考えていた。英語がわかっていても、なかなかピッタリの日本語が出てこない。今日は読者からブログの誤りを指摘されたので報告しておきます。読者が私の不勉強、至らないところを指摘してくれるので有難く思う。誤りを指摘された箇所はこちら。

三浦按針は教科書に載るほど有名ではないが、横須賀市逸見町では少しは名が知れている。かれは約400年ほど前、ここ逸見村に徳川家康が250石の領地を与えた英国人だ。彼にゆかりのある4市（大分県臼杵市、静岡県伊東市、横須賀市、長崎県平戸市）の市長がNHKに三浦按針を連続テレビ小説に取り上げてもらうようにお願いしたそうだ。とんでもない！先ほど郵便局にいって下記写真にある三浦按針関係の新聞を読んでいたら局長が「逸見が有名になって欲しいですね」とテレビ小説化に意欲満々だった。何を考えているのか？逸見は静かな町でいい。大量の人間に押しかけられたら大迷惑。鎌倉の小町に住んでいる私の知人は観光客にゴミを捨てられて迷惑している、と嘆いていた。地価が上がったりすればこれはもうワンツーパンチで、私は大島移住などを真剣に考える。ちなみに、三浦按針に関して日本の研究者が誰も知らないような話だが、James Clavell の Shogun の主人公は明らかに William Adams がモチーフになっていた。これは1,000ページ以上の分厚い小説で学生の頃に読んだ。

私の英語ノート 2015/11/29

中央のまるで囲っている new digs は007最新作『スペクター』でも登場した単語。このくらいの単語力を持ち合わせていないと、映画の英語はおぼつかないことになる。よく書店に行くと英単語は1500で十分だとか目に付くがあのくらいの語彙だと、幼児のレベル。5000や6000でも幼稚園レベル。私は20,000をスタート地点と考えている。イディオムは2,000がスタート地点。英語の学習に終わりはない。the sky's the limit.

爆買いを英語でなんと言うか？

爆買いという現象は最近までに日本になかった現象なので従来の表現方法ではちょっと物足りなくなる。爆買いを的確に表現できる英語は shopping frenzy, shopping madness です。爆買いの爆発的な、制御不能な、というニュアンスが frenzy にあります。frenzy という単語を理解できればいいでしょう。

私の英語ノート 2015/11/27

私の英語ノートは毎日3－4ページのペースで増えると書いたが、実は先にコンピューターに入力するので、書き漏らしが多い。書き忘れさえなければ、あと一ページは多くなると思う。まあ、それはよしとして、明日は中央に書いてある media frenzy を記事にしようかとおもっている。明日記事にすると言うことはつまり、明後日のブログに載せるということ。
つい先ほど、007最新作『スペクター』を見てきた。相変わらず荒唐無稽なストーリーだったが、やはりロケーションのスケールは桁違いだった。字幕さえなければもっと映画を楽しめたかもしれないが、字幕は見事な訳だった。映画館で映画を見る機会は滅多にないが、いつも思うことがある。それは、ヒヤリングとは地道な積み上げの成果以外のなにものでもないということだ。

英語ノートを公開するようになってから、字を丁寧にに書くようになった。いまだに、自分で読み返すことが出来ない部分もあるが、それでも読者を意識してか丁寧に書いている。一年前のノートなどはまったく読めなくなっているが、それは問題ではない。全てタイプして保存してあるので、いつでも引っ張り出せる。コンピューターとは便利なものだ。このコンピューターの時代にも AFN で英語を習おうとしている人たちがいる。AFN（むかしの FEN)で英語を習ったのは長崎玄弥先生とかの時代。つまり今から50年ほど前の時代の話だ。いまは AFN 以外にも色々な選択肢がある。英語が昔よりも格段に身近になっている。しかし、やる気だけは今も昔も遠い場所にある。Go get 'em, Tiger!

もう、お分かりと思うが、私の英語ノートは YouTube から直接取り込んでいる harvest 。今朝採れたての新鮮な英語だ。このような英語はすぐに身につけるべし。特にニュースなどで使われている英語はほとんど決まっていてそんなに単語も多くない。だからニュース程度の英語は100%聞き取れて当たり前と言える。映画でも恋愛物は語彙も比較的少ないので比較的易しい。簡単な映画は難しいSF映画などにチャレンジする前に征服しておくべきだろう。大体のものはすぐにわかるがわからなければ辞書を引く、それでもわからなければネイティブに聞く、、、ここまではセオリー通りだが、辞書に載っていない言葉、言い回しが沢山ある。文化的なものでどうしても理解できないものは一応、書き留めてストックしておく、するとまたいつか必ずお目にかかれる、同じ相手でも二度会えば、勝負になる。だから、わからない言葉や言い回しは捨てておいてはいけない。私の英語ノートはこのようなものが書き込まれている単語帳兼雑学帳のようなものだ。このノートをつけている限り、ブログのネタが尽きることはない。

私の英語ノート 2015/11/23

当たり前のことでも、一応英語ノートに書き込む。書くということは指の神経を総合的　coordination に使うことでタイピングよりも効果があると思う。とにかく書く。難しいことでも、簡単なことでも。単語帳について一言。今朝の youtube に単語帳のcm があった。たまに電車に乗ると単語を勉強している学生や会社員が目に付くのでこのコマーシャルは見ている人の興味をそそるはずだ。売るのが目的だから中身は公開しないだろう。このようなものは過去にいくらでもあった。単語帳は自分で作るべし。

私の英語ノート 2015/11/22

これが毎日私が YouTube を聞きながらメモっている大学ノート。私の字は chicken scratch で、読めない人が多いと思うが、読める読めないは大した問題ではない。まるで囲ってあるのはこれから出題しようかなと思っている内容で、横線で消したのは出題済みということ。私は毎日3－4ページはメモるので、大学ノートは月に一冊くらいのペースで消化する。もちろん携帯は無理なので写真に撮って持ち歩き、わからないことがあればネイティブに聞くようにしている。

毎日出題しているヒアリングの練習問題への読者の反響が非常に大きいのにはちょっと驚いている。私のブログの記事を最初から読んでいる人、毎日読んでいる人、毎日練習問題を解いている人、、、必ずヒヤリングが上達する、つまり確実に英語が上達する。これは間違いなく保証できる。私がいつも英語は暗記、暗記、暗記、単語やイディオムを無限に増やせというのは言い換えれば耳に引っかかる英語を増やせと言っているようなものだ。つまり、英語で理解できる範囲を広げて行き何度も耳に入った言葉はすぐに忘れたりはしない。そして何度も聞いた言葉は自分の口から出るようになる。英書は話すように書かれているので、ヒヤリングが出来る人は英語を日本語同様の感覚で読めるようになる。すると、今度はネイティブのような英語が簡単に書ける様になる。以上が英語学習の全てであり、それ以上の極意は存在しない。ずいぶんサラッと書いてしまったが、もちろん聞く、話す、読む、書くはひとつひとつが大変で気の遠くなるような作業だ。一日15分だけの勉強ではまったく足りない。三ヶ月で何とかなるものでもない。
