数日前にフィリッピンのバギオ市のことに触れたが、今日もバギオ市のお話。ここは1945年に米軍のじゅうたん爆撃に遭っている。もちろん目標は当時バギオを支配していたのは憎きジャップだった。バギオ市の大聖堂にはそのことが書かれている。じゅうたん爆撃は carpet bombing というが、blanket bombing と言い換えても構わない。

REQUIESCANT IN PACT: On these grounds were laid to rest the remains of victims of the carpet bombing of Baguio on March 15, 1945. Eternal rest grant to them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. バギオ絨毯攻撃の犠牲者がここに眠る。主よ、彼らを安らかに寝かせ、永遠の光をあて給え。RIP.

私の英語ノートの一番下に書いた requiescat in pace はラテン語で rest in peace, R.I.P. のこと。発音はレクゥィエスカット・イン・パーケ、レクゥィエスカット・イン・パチェ。
