今から40数年前は電話番号は3桁でした。それほど電話は珍しいものでした。いまは普通の電話を固定電話といいますが、携帯電話の普及前はこんな呼び方はありませんでした。英語で固定電話のことをlandlineといいます。そして携帯電話をcell phone もしくはmobile phoneといいます。（ちなみに韓国ではハンド・フォンといいます。）日本語でフリーダイアルを英語ではtoll free callといいます。公衆電話器はpay phoneまたはpublic phoneです。phone boothと言えば公衆電話（場所）のことです。0:01 the landline is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

ミリー先生からのコメント：This post contains some very interesting information on phones. I like how in Japan you can still use a pay phone on the side of the road. Unfortunately, in the States, this is not so. Because of problems with homelessness, vandalization, and health concerns, pay phone booths have been banned in the States. You may see a pay phone in open places such as laundry mats, in the mall, or in open areas that are visible to the public eye. Otherwise, you will not see any phone booths.
