漢字で書くと詫び・寂びになります。さて、これはどういう意味か？まず日本語がよくわからない。これでは話にならないので少し勉強します。その結果はどうやらtranquility and simplicityのようです。tranquility(sabi),simplicity(wabi)です。日本語よりも英語のほうがわかり易い。どうしても英語が思いつかない場合はそのままの日本語で良いのではないでしょうか？wabi, sabiでもオーケーです。侘び・寂びは茶事とは切っても切れない関係があり何故戦国時代に茶道が普及したかと言うと、当時の武将たちは北朝鮮の金正日のようにいつ誰に寝首をかかれるかわからなかったので、人に知己を見出せなかった。つまりは非常に孤独だったということです。侘び寂びを外国に説明する上でもうひとつのキーワードは孤独感なのかもしれません。これはトップにいるものにしかわからない心境だそうですから、凡人には想像もつきませんが、孤独感にはlonelinessとsolitudeがあります。lonelinessは友がいないの孤独感、solitudeは友は要らないの孤独感です。
