日本語では警鐘、警告、予兆くらいの意味ですが、これもバビロン王国が壁に書かれた予言通りに滅亡した故事にちなみます。（ダニエル記より）英語で一番難しいのはコメディーではなく欽定訳聖書（つまりKing James version)の中世英語でありここからくるさまざまな表現を自在に使えるようになることです。なんだ、現代英語じゃなければ、必要ないのに！と言いたいことろですが、日本語でも「来る（きたる）、3月30日には」のように古い言い方が現代日本語にかなり沢山つかわれています。このようなことに気がつかないのがネイティブの特権です。使いこなすためには例外を一つ一つおぼえる以外の方法はありません。英語の上級者には聖書のKing James versionの一読をお勧めします。すると下のビデオがよくわかると思います。注;聖書には道徳的に正しいことも書かれていますが、意図的な嘘や絵空事もかかれているので頭でふるいにかけながら読むことが大切です。英語の学習が目的であることをいつも念頭において読むことを心がけましょう。
