その場の状況を空気とするならsituationを使ってgrasp the situation, fathom the situationです。fathomは海運用語です。海の深さを測るための単位のようなものです。ロープに石をくくって海に投げ入れ深さを測りました。vibeを使うともっと砕けた言い方が出来ます。did you get the vibe?（空気読めた？） what vibes are you picking up?（どんな空気読んでるの？）catch wind of ナントカ、、ナントカに感づく、と言うイディオムも押さえておきましょう。read social cues（仕草を読む）も参考にしましょう。smell the air（匂いをかぎ分ける）も使えるでしょう。
