put a lid onという言い方は英語にもありますが、使い方はやや違い、今以上に悪くならないようにくい止める、あるいはput a lid on it.（だまれ！）として使われます。KEEP a lid onとすれば日本語のニュアンス通り「臭い物には蓋をする」となります。sweep something under the rug（1:50 臭い物はカーペットの下に履き込んでしまえ）なる言い方もあります。したのビデオではsweep it under the carpet(2:43)ですが、同じことです。
