米大寒波について

昨日の新聞の見出しにはpolar vortexと大きく書いてあった。日本語でなんと言ってわからないので英和辞書をみると極冠となっている。polarとは北極圏くらいの意味で（ちなみに白熊はpolar bear）vortexとは錐体（三角錐や円錐）のとがった先端部分のこと。したがって極冠という和訳で問題はない。vortexという単語は竜巻の時にもよく聞かれる。渦（うず）という意味もある。竜巻が円錐形をしているからだろう。0:07 the polar vortex is a huge persistent area of low pressure that sits over the North Pole. 極冠は北極圏に居座る広範囲な低気圧地帯のことだ。注；図解でわかりやすいビデオ。
